2009 Champion Hurdle Result
In what was a fantastic race with a gripping finish, it was the Nicky Henderson trained second string, Punjabi, who held on grimly to fend off the severe challenges of both Celestial Halo and the hot favourite Binocular.
Punjabi who has had a mixed bag of form this season was clearly at his very best for this race and justified jockey Barry Geraghty's faith in him. Binocular, who was the Hendeson yard's main hope just could not find enough going up the Cheltenham Hill and was held by the first two.
It was ther biggest field since 1991 and featured four past winners, none of who managed to get into the frame this time around.
Punjabi was third in the 2008 Champion Hurdle.
